The front triangle is Reynolds 853, the rear stays are 725 and the fork is Reynolds 525. I think the head tube is 725, too. It's silver brazed.\n\nSince I'm 6'1\" and just under 190 lbs, the tubing was selected for strength and durability rather than saving weight. The bike lacks gears and a back brake so it's nice and light. I haven't weighed it. One day I might.\n\nThe wheels were built by Brixton Cycles and most of the other components were bought from Will at Hubjub.\n\nThe tubes are connected with Pacenti lugs. The fork crown is stainless steel. I asked Robin to cut the lugs so as to make them simple but elegant. Nothing too curly or ornate. I think he did an amazing job. The fork crown and rear fork ends (drop outs) are my two favourite features. The cutting and polishing of the fork crown are incredibly precise as is the paint work by Argos Cycles.\n

\nThat's pretty tight for a road bike and not too far off modern track bike geometry for a frame of its size. It's a very comfortable ride given that I asked for something a bit more 'track' than the Surly Steamroller which it replaces. And since it allows for a quill stem I can use the beautiful Nitto steel 65' track stem at a comfortable height and still achieve the classic track 'drop' which I like.\n\nI'd highly recommend working with Robin. He absorbed many lengthy emails from me with pictures of lugs and other frames I like and was happy to meet my very detailed requests while making sure I ended up with a frame design that 'made sense' to him given the uses I was going to put it to: fairly short road distances, lots of hills and the occasional velodrome ride.\n\nRobin works alone and the wait on my frame and fork was four months. "While up in Canwick last weekend, I was looking over the small collection of birth/death/marriage certificates that Dad's dad accumulated over the years. As it happens, I was able to quickly trace one line of the family back to 1620 due to the research that this man has done. I don't find the page very easy to follow, but I think that the following is accurate.\n\nI've only traced the Winn family back to the early 19th Century but prior to this, a maternal line of the family were the Goldsacks from the Dover area.\n\nLouisa Goldsack married Charles Benjamin Winn on September 3rd 1879. Charles' father was William Winn, a Mariner, and Charles was born in Cowes on the Isle of Wight in 1856. This line is obviously the next area of research.\n\nLouisa Goldsack, my Great Great Grandmother, was born on 19th February 1854 at St. Margarets, daughter of William Dixon Goldsack and Sarah Ann Dixon. William was also born in St. Margarets on August 11th 1822. Sarah was born on May 11th 1823 in West Langton.\n\nWilliam Goldsack was the son of Thomas Goldsack and Ann Dixon. I went to UCL for my sigmoidoscopy today, which is supposed to be a rather more pleasant affair than a colonoscopy, but that wasn't the case for me. My colonoscopy two years ago was a breeze by comparison. Apparently to make life easier on sigmoidoscopy patients, you are just advised to take over the counter laxatives (did nothing for me) and then you are given an enema just prior to the procedure. It was the enema that kicked things off for me. It felt like I was going to drop my guts, so much so that I panicked a bit and, combined with 24hrs without food and several hours without fluids, I felt very faint. So much so, that I pulled the emergency cord and had a nurse taking my blood pressure while blowing the bottom out of the toilet. I was hot, light-headed and my hands were tingling.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nThe actual sigmoidoscopy was also quite uncomfortable. Unlike the colonoscopy, I wasn't given sedatives because I was unaccompanied, which didn't concern me at first but because I was increasingly tense and because the doctor was not especially gentle, the whole thing was quite uncomfortable. Added to this, when undergoing either a colonoscopy or sigmoidoscopy, you have air blow into your colon to expand it so they can get a better look. This is largely responsible for the discomfort and I think it's difficult for them to judge how much any one individual can take without them relying on feedback in the form of cries and winces.\r\n\r\nI watched the entire procedure on a clear, colour monitor and was very impressed with the definition that the camera produces. The doctor couldn't find any of the polyps that were seen on the scan. There was some areas that hadn't fully flushed out so that may have been covering something, but on the whole my sigmoid looked in good order to me. But what do I know?!\r\n\r\nIt will be referred to Anton who will decide whether to (finally) undertake a full colonoscopy or just leave it for a year or so because of so little evidence of anything sinister. From my point of view, a full colonoscopy in the first place would have been preferable over the CT scan (when my colon was also filled with air) and then the sigmoidoscopy. I think many patients experience such agony during their colonoscopy (I know three people who would attest to that) so any other procedure that can be undertaken is usually seen as preferable. She died aged 85, last Thursday morning, July 9th at 2am. I saw her, barely conscious, in hospital on Monday evening and from Tuesday, she slept until her death.\r\n\r\nI am only 35, Luke 32, and yet we've sat beside both our dad and now our nanny as they've died. I feel exhausted by it. Despite what we see in films and even documentaries, people don't slip away quietly or in stillness or serenity. Even in the complete absence of consciousness, the body really fights to stay alive. The heart wants to keep beating, the lungs want to keep inhaling and exhaling. There are noises, loud groans and persistent gurgling. Each organ is reduced to its basic function, no longer seeming to work together as they should. You will it to end, hoping that every exhale will be the last for their sake and for yours. The last few shallow breaths are a minute or two apart and the warmth and colour quickly disappears from their hand that you are holding and their face that you are kissing.\r\n\r\nDad died at home and we attended to him, removing the tube that was draining his stomach, the colostomy bag and syringe driver. We dressed him and he lay covered in bed overnight before Luke and I carried him from the house to the funeral director's car. We dug his grave, carried his coffin through the village, lowered him into the ground and stood back and watched as friends and family picked up shovels and filled the earth back in.\r\n\r\nFollowing Nanny's death in hospital, we asked the nurses to remove the tubes, despite knowing how to do it ourselves. It was their domain. There was no opportunity to take nanny back home, but before her stroke, she had spent the day happy in the company of family and friends. Yesterday, we carried her coffin through the village and lowered it into the ground. No shovels this time, just a few handfuls of dirt over a willow coffin. It was a decent goodbye.\r\n\r\nNanny lived a long and full life, happy and independent until the end. \r\nWe went to Glendalough, in Wicklow, on Saturday. Rob and I climbed up to the ridge to get an amazing view of the lakes set into the glacial valley. I got bitten badly by midges and am still waking in the night scratching at my arms. On Sunday, we went to Howth, where D, R & F live. It was F's 2nd birthday. If I lived in Dublin, I'd want to live in Howth. A great little seaside village, well connected with the city. On Monday, to St. Anne's for much of the day, wandering around the park that was once part of the Guinness estate, I believe. There are still ruins from before the fire. We're back home today, enjoying our own company. I've built a makeshift brick barbeque which we'll be using over the rest of the week. Happy days.\r\n

The second one I'll send you by email, because it's a bit too long for a blog comment.\r\n\r\nAbout 15 years ago I was driving through a beautiful valley in the Yorkshire Wolds, somewhere north of Driffield (I was on the way to Scarborough). It really was a beautiful place, and I remember when I arrived in Scarborough I made a mental note of the route, but I didn't write it down.\r\nAfter that, each time I drove between Lincoln and Scarborough I could never retrace my route through that valley no matter how many times I tried (I drove that route 4 or 5 times a year I guess). After I got back from Japan in 1998 and my mum moved into the house at Harmston, a painting showed up on her kitchen wall (it wasn't just brought into being, she bought it, my story isn't an episode from a Haruki Murakami novel). The painting was by David Hockney and, looking at it, I was sure it was of the same valley I'd driven through several year earlier. I while later I heard him on R4 describing these series of 'Yorkshire Wold' paintings (his mother lived in nearby Bridlington and, her being very elderly, he was often there), and referring to the beautiful valley in the area of the Yorkshire Wolds. He described the names of the nearby villages, but never said exactly which road it was. Everytime I go back to Harmston and see the painting I think of the road and the valley.
